Opting Out of Telemarketing
and Direct Mail Offers

  • Opt out of telemarketing calls at www.donotcall.gov

  • Opt out of mailed credit card offers from CRA (credit reporting agency) lists for unsolicited credit and insurance offers by calling 1-888-5OPTOUT. You will need to provide your social security number. Creditors and insurers may use file information as the basis for sending you unsolicited offers of credit or insurance. If you call, you may select to have your name removed for five years or permanently. If you elect the option for permanent removal, you will be mailed a Notice of Election to Opt Out form to complete and return.

  • To receive fewer unsolicited telemarketing calls, you can register for The DMA's Telephone Preference Service (TPS), which allows you to "opt out" of national telemarketing lists by sending a postcard or letter that includes your name, address and phone number to:

    Telephone Preference Service
    Direct Marketing Association
    PO Box 1559
    Carmel, NY 10512

All DMA members are required to run their telemarketing list of prospective customers against the TPS file, to remove the individuals who have registered with TPS from their calling lists. The service is also available to non-members of the DMA, so that all marketers may eliminate the names of those who wish to receive fewer unsolicited telephone calls.

This is updated monthly and distributed four times a year -- January, April, July, and October (some companies receive it monthly). Your name remains on the file for five years. Typically you will see the amount of telemarketing calls you receive begin to decrease about three months after your name is entered onto the quarterly file.

  • To receive less commercial advertising mail or email, you can register for The DMA's Mail Preference Service (MPS). This service does not apply to mail sent to your business address, or to "resident/occupant" mail. When you register with MPS, your name and address are placed on a "do-not-mail" file. All DMA members are required to run their list of prospective customers against the MPS file, to remove the individuals who have registered with MPS from their mailings. The service is also available to non-members of the DMA.

This "do not mail" file is updated monthly and distributed four times a year -- January, April, July, and October (some mailers receive the file monthly). Your name remains on file for five years, after which time you may register again. There is an online registration for $5 or you can send a postcard or letter for free that includes your name, home address, and signature to:

    Direct Marketing Association
    PO Box 643
    Carmel, NY 10512
